Web ChairInspired by Emiliano Godoy’s Knit Chair, I designed and built this chair around the needs of a person wanting to curl up and read.
I sewed 1/8th inch thick baltic birch ply tiles-- individually modeled and laser-cut-- into a large web to create the seat, and devised a support structure using 1/4 inch plywood and a ratchet strap to keep the parts together. I loved the challenge of using two completely different materials in this project-- one rigid, the other flexible-- to create a comfortable and stable structure to read in. |
Stitch ExperimentationTo better familiarize myself with the joining stitch before tackling the whole web, I created small swatches to sew together.
This allowed me not only to get used to the process and tension, but also to develop a stitch path that would minimize switchbacks and keep all knots on the underside. |
